Petting and coitus without emotional involvement can be experienced as purely mechanical or even exploitive behavior. If it goes on for years, it may reduce one's ability for a deep emotional attachment and adversely affect one's personality growth. Purely physical sexuality may impoverish one's life experiences and foster a cold, calculated, mechanical attitude to people of the opposite sex. In some instances, sex without affection breeds selfish, uncaring behavior typical of exploitive sociopaths and violent rapists.
As Bios (1979) put it, the conflict between the generations is essential for the growth of the individual and perhaps for human civilization. Some parents wish to believe that their offspring will perpetuate society and the parental sociocultural set of values (Bengtson and Troll, 1978), but many parents accept the separation. Identification with one's peer group and becoming an "in-group" member gives the adolescent a feeling of security and power. The "we-group" makes the adolescent perceive oneself not as a child who depends on and obeys rules imposed in a heteronomous manner by the parents, but as a socionomous individual who takes part in setting the rules established by his or her peer group.
I suggested a five-level system, starting with: (1) the infantile anomous phase, with a total lack of self-restraint and narcissistic and unlimited selfishness; (2) the childhood phobonomous phase of fear and defensive-aggressive behavior; (3) the late childhood heteronomous phase, where the child accepts the rules and regulations imposed by his or her parents; (4) the socionomous phase of adolescents and many adults who accept rules that they take part in establishing; and (5) the autonomous phase.
